Iwas born in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, México. My family and I moved to Arizonawhen I was 17, yet we were close enough to the border that we could spend ourweekends in Mexico. I attended the Methodist Church in Mexico, where Ihad the opportunity to serve in youth and music ministries. In 2009, Ihad the opportunity to serve as a Lay Person Assigned in Somerton, while I attendedGrad School. I married Michelle, a kindergarten teacher, in 2010. 2011 was aneventful year: I finished my master’s degree in Counseling, became a U.S.citizen, and moved to New Jersey to attend seminary. In 2013, our daughterMichaela was born and, in 2014, I finished my M.Div. While we really enjoyedour time in New Jersey, we could not stay away from the desert for too long, and, in 2016, we moved back to Arizona. Since then, we have been serving in theSouth District until this year, when I was appointed as an Associate Pastor toPrescott UMC. Some of the things I enjoy are playing guitar, playing chess, andgoing to the movies, which, of course, has not been possible in the last fewmonths. Michelle is currently working to get her M.Div. at Claremont School ofTheology. Michaela currently attends 2nd grade and enjoys singing, dancing, and downloading games on my phone.

Blue? Yes, blue as in the blues. As in 'I am feeling blue.' Not everyone is up and cheery for the Christmas holidays. Dealing with the death of a loved one, facing life after divorce or separation, coping with the loss of a job, living with cancer or some other dis-ease that puts a question mark over the future, and a number of other human situations make parties and joviality painful for many people in our congregations and communities. There is a growing attentiveness to the needs of people who are blue at Christmas. Increasing numbers of churches are creating sacred space for people living through dark times. Such services are reflective, accepting where we really are, and holding out healing and hope.
Some churches hold a service of worship on the longest night of the year, which falls on or about December 21st, the Winter Solstice. There is an interesting convergence for this day as it is also the traditional feast day for Saint Thomas the Apostle. This linkage invites making some connections between Thomas's struggle to believe the tale of Jesus' resurrection, the long nights just before Christmas, and the struggle with darkness and grief faced by those living with loss.

Collect for Saint Thomas, December 21
Everliving God, who didst strengthen thy apostle Thomas with firm and certain faith in thy Son's resurrection: Grant us so perfectly and without doubt to believe in Jesus Christ, our Lord and our God, that our faith may never be found wanting in thy sight; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
